About Us

Our Story: Access of the Red River Valley

Located in Moorhead, Minnesota, Access of the Red River Valley was born out of a grassroots effort in 1984 by a group of determined parents who wanted a better future for their children with disabilities. Rejecting the notion of institutional care, they worked tirelessly to keep their children in private homes and community settings. Their dedication and vision laid the foundation for Access of the Red River Valley, an organization committed to supporting individuals with disabilities in leading fulfilling, independent lives.

Our Mission and Values

At Access, our work is guided by core values:

  • Encouraging meaningful daily interaction with the community
  • Empowering individuals to make informed choices
  • Supporting individuals in taking risks and planning for their future

Our mission is to foster independence and dignity for each person we serve. Today, our clients continue to enjoy the comfort and autonomy of living in their own homes, supported by trained staff who assist with daily living skills and personal development.

Our Growth and Services

The 1990s: Expanding Our Reach

Throughout the 1990s, Access expanded its mission to include services for younger children with developmental and behavioral disabilities. Recognizing the growing needs of families, schools, and daycares, we introduced children’s services led by a dedicated behavior specialist. These programs focus on enhancing the strengths of both children and their families, equipping them with the skills needed to overcome daily challenges.

United Way Grant and Community Impact

In 1997, a grant from United Way enabled Access to provide specialized behavioral support to children in daycare and school settings. This pivotal funding allowed us to deepen our impact on local families and children.

Milestones in Our Journey

2001: Harbor Achievement Center

To foster creativity, socialization, and fun, we opened the Harbor Achievement Center in 2001. This space became a safe haven where clients could gather for crafts, entertainment, and shared experiences.

2002: Spring Break Activities

In the spring of 2002, Access introduced Spring Break programming for school-aged clients. Professional staff designed engaging activities, including community tours, crafts, and snacks, to create memorable experiences for our clients.

2007: Tri-Plex and Michael Czichotzki Learning Center (MCLC)

In 2007, we broke ground on a tri-plex at 910 9th Ave. S. in Moorhead. This facility houses up to six clients and features the Michael Czichotzki Learning Center (MCLC), a vibrant space for learning and recreation. The MCLC is equipped with art supplies, computers, exercise equipment, and more, offering clients opportunities to participate in weekly classes and events.

2013: Twin Home Expansion

In 2013, we expanded again, building a handicap-accessible twin home at 3601 and 3603 11th Ave. S. in Moorhead. This facility accommodates up to six clients, providing a comfortable and inclusive living environment.
